The Values That Root Us.

Our work stems from the principles of Permaculture, a term first used by Bill Mollison to describe a design system that addresses some of our Earth’s most pressing challenges: loss of topsoils, mass extinctions leading to a decrease in biodiversity, climate change, an increasing lack of clean water. Permaculture as a design system rests firmly on the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of indigenous peoples throughout the world, gained over millenia through careful observation of their environment and a deep, mutually reciprocal relationship with place.  Permaculture combines TEK with modern science and technology, making a design system that utilizes nature’s unchanging best practices and appropriate technology for our current context.  As a philosophy, Permaculture is based in a simple code of Ethics: Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share. Simply put, every action we take should put the care of the Earth as a top priority, without which there would be no Life as we know it.  From there, we move to care of people, which emphasizes humans’ needs and desires, as well as incorporates the final priority, an equitable distribution of surplus and abundance to all people.

Justice and Equity

Recognizing that we work on the traditional lands of the Coast Miwok people, and in immense gratitude for the opportunity to make this place our home, we aim to donate a percentage of yearly profits to the self-determining efforts of the Coast Miwok.

Recognizing that our current positional power and privilege within society has been uplifted and maintained through a variety of systems of oppression (all the -isms), and recognizing that People Care and Fair Share make up two of our three main ethics, we strive to do our part, through our work, to balance the power dynamics and redistribute wealth and abundance.

The first way that we strive to do this is through our sliding scale payment options, which charge more from those who can afford it, and less from those who can’t. Please reach out about what options are available to you as a potential client.

The second way we aim for justice and equity in our work is through making our educational offerings as accessible as possible, both in terms of cost, and in the ways we create a safe and brave space for the diverse participants we hope to be in community with.

The third way we aim for sharing abundance is through continued self-reflection and education, always striving to learn more about how we can be better humans to those around us, in our words, in our thoughts, in our hearts.
